Vitamin D For Breast Cancer
The benefits of Vitamin D against prevention of bone related illnesses are well known. However, now research also shows these benefits extend in preventing breast cancer. Breast cancer remains highly prevalent in the South Asian region, with reasons unknown. However, new researches claim its efficacy of reducing cancer rates by well over 70%. Access to vitamin D is not difficult, and no high dose supplements are necessary. A proper and prolonged exposure to sunlight daily is enough to help create vitamin D in the body. This vitamin is self-generated by the body, and therefore it is very rare that any external sources are needed apart from the daily intake. The problem develops when exposure to sunlight becomes infrequent.Vitamin D performs many functions in the body. It helps build stronger immunity, controls cell growth, particularly in the case of cancer cells, and helps in the absorption of calcium from gut. Cancer is the unnecessary and often dangerous growth of one or more type of cells in the body. The primary problem in the mechanism is the reduced control over the rate of growth of these cells. The increased growth called cancer starts to use up the body’s supplies to feed it, and starves the other healthy cells. This cell growth is controlled and even reduced by vitamin D especially in cases of breast and colon cancers.
Current therapies use the activated form of vitamin D to actively kill and destroy cells that have started producing cancer cells. Oral intake and regular exposure to sunlight can produce enough vitamin D levels to prevent such growths to take place. A more active lifestyle and exposure to sun without the use of sunscreen can be a very good therapeutic prevention. Current beautification standards particularly in the South Asian region demand fairness of the skin. This leads to women avoiding sunlight altogether, or using sunscreen to block the effects of sunlight.
